Most of us know what it's like to be alone. We understand the sadness of being by ourselves when we don't want to. But for some, loneliness isn't just when they're physically alone, it's also when they're with many, many people. Gatspy is surrounded by people most nights out of the week because he throws crazy parties with a tremendous amount of people. He also has so many material things in his life, most would think he is as happy as he can be, but it's quite the opposite. Gatspy lives of life of hiding behind a veil (like the Minister's Black Veil!).
This reminds me of a song by Chris Brown called Lucky Me.
It opens with:
Lights on,
stage set
I guess I gotta put on a show again
Cause everyone's waiting
Females, fly jets...
(more lyrics that are not relevant)
Whatever money can buy I probably got it
That's real talk, yeah.
I see my name in the sky all over the world
And I just sit hear saying,
lucky me
This reminds me of Gatspy because he is always putting on a show for the others around him. He has everything he could ever want, but he is still not happy.
The song then goes on to say:
I gotta pose for the cameras
Even when my world's falling down I still wear a smile
Lucky me
Even though I'm so damaged I gotta pick myself up and perform for the crowd
Lucky me
Pray none of my loved ones wanna be stars
Cause nobody said it'd be so hard
Wouldn't put this on no one else
Yeahh, Lucky me
I believe, just like Chris Brown, Gatspy would not wish his life on anyone. He tries to make everyone believe he is always happy, especially at his many parties so they envy his success and happiness, but in reality, he is miserable.

I-n-d-e-p-e-n-d-e-n-t...DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?!
I rid myself of you! No longer will I sit up at night, thinking so hard of what could have been, what should have been. I will not stand for this any longer. I have shed many tears, but never have I felt free afterwards. The burden is too great and I'm letting it all fall to the ground. As I move forward I ask others to join me. It is not worth the fight any longer--follow me and all the pain will vanish, it won't be easy but then, what task really is? I am ready for:
Freedom
A good nights rest
Happiness
Laughter
Closer
This and more shall come as I finally rid myself of this burden. I hereby remove all regret from my concious. I am an independent mind that no longer dwells in the past. What is done is done and it can only help my future.

Transcendentalist
After reading these two essays, I've come to believe that is is very important to trust yourself. When you go with your gut feeling, often times you are correct and besides, you know what's right for you and what will make you happy. When you have a new idea don't hide it just because you think others won't like it! It's your life and you have to take charge!
Most of the time, people are fully capable of knowing what is best for themselves, but sometimes factors in life leave you feeling like something is right for you when in reality, it isn't. This is why I've come to the conclusion that while you must have trust in yourself you also need others around you that you trust and are willing to help you. There are many situations that can cause an individual to think irrationally and make bad decisions, hurting themselves and others. We all need a good, strong support system for our weakest moments.

Atticus Finch and Jake Tyler Brigance
This is so long overdue, I've wanted to post this for awhile now but haven't had the chance. When we watched Atticus Finch giving his moving speech in class all those weeks ago, it reminded me very much of the movie, A Time To Kill. For those who don't know what this movie is it's about a young, white lawyer in the south defending a black man that shot a white man after the white man and his friends raped and beat his 10-year-old daughter.
Both speeches are filled with such passion and emotion that really gets to your heart, just really gets you deep down.
Here's a clip of Matthew McConaughey (Jake, the lawyer) giving his moving speech in A Time to Kill. It still makes me tear up everytime I watch it. It's a little long, a little over 8 minutes, but it's worth it, trust me.

Sound and Fury
Well, where do I even begin?
This was one of the most interesting movies I've watched in a very long time. There are just so many questions I have, I'm just so confused. I never knew that many deaf people viewed being deaf as a blessing. Maybe because I am hearing to me it seems more like a disability. I would be devasted if any of my children were born deaf.
If I was in the position of being a parent who has a deaf child and needs to make the decision about the cochlear implant, I don't know what I would do. I'm leaning towards getting the implant because I want my child to have as many oppurtunities in society as he or she can. I would still want them sign language and all about the deaf culture, but I'd want them to see both sides of the world, not just one.

Inauguartion Speeches
This post took me a very long time to write (obviously). I really struggled with what I wanted to write about the presidential speeches. After much thought I wanted to write about the use of freedom in the speeches. It's funny how each president speaks of how many freedoms we have here in the United States. I believe that while we are in a sense, free, we still are held back by many "not on paper" restrictions. We have the freedom of speech, but if we say the wrong thing to the wrong crowd, we could get beat up. And even if they don't beat you up, many will find ways to hurt the person in other ways. I guess some may say that's not really a restriction, but I'd love to live a life (and I bet many others would too) where you can stick up for yourself, do the things you love, and not worry about what others may do to you the next day.
Another thing that comes to my attention is the fact that while freedom is supposed to be for every person living in our country, not too long ago many different groups of people didn't have the same rights and freedoms of others. African-Americans were considered a lesser race that didn't deserve the same rights as whites. Even women, no matter what color, were looked down upon and not treated with the same respect or given the same freedoms as white males.
In a country that speaks so highly of our freedoms we need to really annalyse what is really going on. Words don't hold as much power as actions.
